The Value of Experience

Today we had a table at the Sykesville Apple Butter Market and it was a nice event. We made a little money and enjoyed talking with lots of visitors. It was well organized and well attended. This is the very type of outreach event that the town needs.

I wonder if "leaders" understand that the value of these types of events far exceeds the cost of making them happen. The value of public relations is not something that should be deleted from a town budget on a whim.

There are so many other valueable assets that the town has and that have been built up by the efforts of volunteers as well as town staff. The first one that comes to mind is the Sykesville Gate House Museum of History, which is an extremely valuable asset. Anyone contemplating dismantling the Museum needs to visit it before they coldly treat it as a budgetary "line item".

Clearly in the case of all government, when the public votes in new "leaders" just for the sake of "change", the inexperience of the new "leaders" is a very great danger to hard-won assets. These hard-won assets can be anything from good employees, to a Post Office, to the public trust.

A good "leader" inspires by having a plan, a vision.
